Subject Directories for Internet Searching
Directories -- created by people not computers -- can lead you to better sources on the subject you are investigating. Also, the larger ones can give you an overview of the potential sources in a particular area. Yahoo.com is an example of a directory approach which integrates many commercial sites; the ones we list will give more weight to non-commercial sites.
Librarian's Index to the Internet -- "more than 11,000 internet sources selected and evaluated by librarians"
Open Directory Project -- now easily accessible through Google, this is the "largest human-edited directory on the web"
World Wide Web Virtual Library -- started by Tim Berners-Lee, creator of the web, each "virtual library" site is run by a volunteer; specializes in very thorough coverage of particular subjects; a bit academic in approach
BUBL Link -- a beautifully organized catalog of 11,000 internet sources, covering all academic areas; a joint technology initiative by the countries of the United Kingdom
Forbes "Best of the Web" Directory -- Forbes Magazine has evaluated more than 3,600 sites; reviews and ratings provided
