How do I..find where is a book is shelved in the library?

Found the book in the catalog, but wondering where to find it in the library? Here's how!

Look for the call number. Each item in the library is assigned a call number, which gives the "shelf address" of that particular item. The call number is shown in the catalog record for that item.

It's highlighted here:

The call number is also typed on a spine label affixed to the actual book.

Become familiar with the general library locations of various categories of call numbers.

If the call number for a book you've chosen starts with a J (for "juvenile"), that means it's in the children's collection and is located in the children's wing.

Specifically:

children's picture books in picture book room shelved alphabetically by author's name

JRA
children's picture books with readalong CDs or cassettes in picture book room in green bins

JVE
children's very easy readers (two blue dots on spine label ll) in long low bookcase near entrance shelved alphabetically by author's or series name

JER
children's easy readers (one blue dot on spine label l) also in long low bookcase near entrance shelved alphabetically by author's name

JBC
children's beginning chapter books ("abc" sticker on spine ) on other side of easy reader bookcase near entrance

J
children's chapter books/novels in tall bookcases against wall

JMYS
children's mysteries in tall bookcases against wall, at the end of the J collection

JNF 001-999
children's non-fiction in low bookcases in the large room of the children's wing NOTE: nonfiction books are assigned numbers from 001-999 in the Dewey Decimal library classification system, according to their subject. The nonfiction books are then shelved in strict numerical order. As a result, books on a given subject are shelved in the same location. (Want to know more about the Dewey Decimal system? Click here.) The children's nonfiction collection starts in the bookcase nearest the story time room.

JNF 398.2-398.4
children's folk and fairy tales this genre of children's literature has always been considered "non-fiction" in libraries and is located separately from the rest of the non-fiction collection; in our library, these books are located in the alcove just outside the picture book room

children's biographies located at the end of the children's non-fiction collection

if the call number for a book you've chosen starts with a Y, the book is in our Teen/Young Adult collection, shelved in the tall bookcases adjacent to the DVD collection.

YA
fiction for readers in the sixth to twelfth grades

YNF
non-fiction for readers in the sixth to twelfth grades (this is where our college guides are shelved)

if the call number does not start with either a J or a Y, the book is in one of our adult collections, and can be found in the following (approximate) locations

FIC
adult fiction (spine label shows only the first initial of author's last name) the first half of this collection is shelved along the curving back wall, and then moves to the three tall bookcases nearby
book club: books with call numbers ending in the words (book club) are in the book club collection located at the beginning of the adult fiction collection
paperback: books with call numbers ending (pbk) are shelved in the popular paperback spinners next to the adult fiction bookcases
new fiction: books added to the library's collection within the last 6 months are located in the bookcase opposite the front desk (identified in the catalog as "adult new fiction"
large print: books with a call number ending in LP are shelved in the bookcase next to new fiction

MYS
adult mysteries (spine label MYS) adult mysteries are shelved next to adult new fiction

001-999
adult non-fiction (shelved by Dewey Decimal number) shelved in the tall bookcases to the left of the center tables
travel: books with Dewey Decimal nos. 914-919, and the collection code "travel" in their catalog records are located in the tall bookcase near the DVD collection and have orange dots l on their spine labels
CT Shelf: books on Connecticut (call number ends with "CT shelf") low bookcase near adult computers
PS: books on parenting of young children (call number starts with PS) located in children's wing, just outside picture book room

B
adult biography (B is followed by subject of biography, and books are shelved alphabetically by subject's last name) low bookcase near exhibit circle

media collections: children's (call number starting with J)

children's videorecordings on DVD and videocassette located at end of curving wall opposite front desk

JBT
children's/teen audio books on CD and audiocassette also located at end of curving wall opposite front desk
